What do I need to get started? Do I really need an expensive Grinder? Do I need.........
This is what I have collected over the years.... I use the dickens out of my 6X48 Craftsman, The two belt grinders
2X72 I made myself, Recently purchased variable speed controls and motors for the 2X72s (good price from Friesen
Electric...tell KoKo I sent you and it will help narrow down motor and controller), Swedish Anvil, number of tongs,
Grizzly belt grinder (1st grinder), Delta 1X42, Recently purchased the 25lb little giant powerhammer from Russell
Cashion in Nashville, and other tools that you see....
The powerhammer is not bolted into the ground but is bolted on the 4X4 platform I made. The dies I am still getting
used to are drawing dies (started with flats). Below is where Mr. Cashion recommended me to pick this sucker up
with a wrecker.
The first forge I made from from a metal oblong bucket with a 1" pipe with holes drilled into for air and a blow dryer.
If you want advise on building that or a belt grinder I will help you the best of my ability.
Building your own grinder:
Use these at your own risk. I will not held responsible for what you build or do with
these. My only recommendations is .........BE SAFE.
These here are 3 phase motors - 1175 RPM. The controls are 220V single phase input
and 220V three phase output. The motor and controller cost just under $500 for the 3
HP set up. Make sure your controller is a NEMA 4 enclosure or it will short out due to
metal dust. I have KBAC-27D controllers.
Variable speed is the way to go.
I do not endorse any one way or supplier. Use your own judgement.
